[fusion_text]Last Thursday, Protechting Session #2 took place at Fidelidade HQ in Rato where both Fidelidade and Beta-i’s representatives along with Carlos Oliveira from Invest Braga and Isabel Vaz from Lúz Saúde got together to discuss how may startups change the future of health.
José Villa de Freitas from Fidelidade introduced the acceleration program and explained that healthcare is just one of the 4 main areas within Protechting where we’re searching for projects with innovative approaches and solutions.
Proudly stating that Fosun – Fidelidade’s owner – has a native startup spirit, José said that, with Protechting, we believe to be contributing for a better society and for making ideas happen by supporting innovation and living up to the program’s motto – innovation is about people.
On the topic discussion itself – the future of health – Carlos Oliveira was the first to mention the benefits of approaching this subject within such an acceleration program as we, in Portugal, have some of the best resources including high quality Universities with top degrees on health related disciplines and we host the biggest nanotechnology center the world located in Braga, north of Portugal. Considered to be one of the main pool of innovation center in the country, Braga is already the home of many interesting medical care & development projects being developed mainly at Startup Braga.
Isabel Vaz, from Lúz Saúde, stated that she has never experienced such a flow of information at her hospital as she does nowadays which means that, for doctors, it is a great challenge to keep up with and manage all the relevant information. For this reason, priority should be given to new projects on Big Data management as health itself, is one of the areas most subject to constant innovation.
Pedro Rocha Vieira, President at Beta-i, also called the attention for the importance of projects focused on Prevention in order to reduce unnecessary costs related to some expensive diseases’ treatment (such as diabetes). For instance, the development of wearables that can track our behaviour and daily routines can contribute for a more accurate prognosis as well as to improve the customisation of clinical care.
As health is a sensitive topic mainly because we’re talking about taking care of people’s lives, technology should be seen as an enabler and not as the main focus, at least not without considering the process around its implementation and supporting structure.
